Following Netpralat’s cycle of online webinars we present the following:

– Title: “Litigating in European courts on procedural rights of criminal suspects and accused”

– Lecturer: Dr. Anna Pivaty, postdoctoral researcher, University of Maastricht. Dr. Pivaty conducts research on the influence of European norm-making institutions on the enforcement of fair trial rights in the individual European states. In 2004-2010, she was involved in strategic litigation before the European Court of Human Rights, while working at the Open Society Justice Initiative, an international NGO involved in promoting law and justice reforms worldwide. She was also trainee at the Registry of the European Court of Human Rights.

– Webinar structure: 30-40 minutes lecture, 20 minutes questions/interventions

– Content: The webinar will address, on a basic level, matters related to litigating before European courts – the ECtHR and CJEU – on procedural rights in criminal proceedings. The following issues will be addressed from the perspective of  criminal defence lawyers: which Court to target with which kind of matter, what conditions must be met for your case to be considered by either Court, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of litigating before the two Courts. The webinar will also discuss the promising areas for litigation before both Courts
